IIT-Ropar, engineering, science and technology premier institute located in Punjab, has announced to join its hands with IIT Alumni Council to set up first Global Centre of Excellence (GCE) in the area of agritech and water technology .
This would be the first such GCE under the India Innovation Network (i2Net) initiative set up by IIT Alumni Council.
The main area of focus for the GEC will be agritech and water technology with multi-disciplinary assist from artificial imaging, computer imaginative and prescient, Internet of things (IoT) sensors, chemical engineering, nuclear physics and many others.
Recently, IIT-Ropar had obtained ₹110 crore value of projects for agriculture and water technology from DST (Department of Science and Technology)
The received fund of ₹110-crore will be complimented for AWaDH (Agriculture & Water Technology Development Hub) that has set up at IIT-Ropar under the National Mission by DST.
As a part of an agrarian State, it has been one of many mandates of IIT-Ropar to take up research and analysis aimed towards addressing water-agriculture associated issues.
Sarit K Das, Director, IIT-Ropar, mentioned, “We are looking forward to leading globally in research for Agritech and Watertech. By optimally utilizing the new paradigm emerging from the deployment of artificial intelligence, remote sensing and genomics, we are uniquely positioned to blend tradition with technology in a very different way.”
India Innovation Network initiative is to build a fifty- institution ecosystem to revitalise research in India by building capacities, enhancing high quality of researchers via higher linkages globally and enhancing the model value of India in general and the IITs and i2Net institutions particularly a press release mentioned. GCE is part of it.

“The council has vision to develop Nation as a leading location for high science research in the world by generating an end-to-end ecosystem with revenue aiming at Rs. 50,000 crore per year and 100,000 researcher scholars within next five years.” Ravi Sharma, President of the IIT Alumni Council, mentioned.
The Council will assist the funding of Rs. 40 crore in Global Centre of Excellence (GCE) Punjab via Pan-IIT Institute and MegaFund.
Agriculture 2.0
It will assist India leapfrog to Agriculture 2.0 by increasing productiveness, lowering chemical fertiliser and pesticide levels, managing later sources and creating higher linkages with markets and direct consumers utilizing disintermediation platforms, the statement mentioned.
“AWaDH ecosystem that has been co-created in association with existing academic and research institutions will place a strong foundation for Agriculture 2.0. In addition, to re-energizing the agriculture economy, the research initiatives will also help in creating new contracts and funded research ecosystem will be capable of earning substantial foreign exchange,” Sharma acknowledged.
IIT Alumni Council is the biggest alumni body in the world of alumni, college students and academicians throughout all of the 23 IITs and partnering i2Net.
