India Ships First-Ever Sea-Freight Consignment of Pomegranates to the US
In a significant milestone for India’s fresh fruit export sector, the country has successfully exported 14 tonnes of pomegranates to the United States via sea for the very first time, the Ministry of Commerce announced on Saturday. This marks a notable shift from the traditional reliance on air freight for such exports.
The shipment, consisting of approximately 4,620 boxes of premium quality pomegranates, was delivered to the East Coast of the United States last month. This new development reflects a growing trend within the agricultural export industry toward adopting more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable logistics solutions.
Historically, Indian pomegranates destined for the US market were transported exclusively by air due to concerns over the perishable nature of the fruit and the long transit time by sea. However, advancements in cold chain logistics and improved post-harvest handling techniques have made sea freight a viable alternative, reducing transportation costs while maintaining fruit quality.
The breakthrough follows the United States’ decision to grant market access for Indian pomegranates during the 2023 season. With this regulatory approval and the successful completion of the first sea shipment, exporters now have greater flexibility and a broader window to cater to growing demand in the US.
The Ministry expressed optimism that this shift will open new avenues for expanding India’s horticultural exports, boost farmer incomes, and enhance the country’s presence in international fruit markets.
