Mango Crop in Yadgir Damaged by Unseasonal Rains and Hailstorm, Karnataka
Mango farmers in Yadgir district, especially in Wadagera taluk, have suffered major losses after unexpected rain, strong winds, and a hailstorm hit the area recently.
Farmers were just a day or two away from harvesting their mango crop, which was expected to be good this year. But the sudden bad weather caused many mangoes to fall from the trees and get damaged.
“We spent thousands of rupees hoping for a good harvest. The unseasonal rains, hailstorm, and strong winds have shattered our hopes,” said farmer Mallikarjun Reddy Bilhar in an interview with The Hindu.
Another farmer, Chand Pasha Kurkundi, said, “The fallen mangoes are damaged and won’t sell, not even at lower prices. Buyers don’t want fruits that have fallen from the tree.”
Mallanagouda Hagaratagi, a local farmer leader, said, “This is the sad reality for farmers. Even when we grow a good crop, we either get poor prices or face losses because of natural disasters. The government should give compensation for the mango crop loss caused by the unseasonal rains.”
The revenue and horticulture departments have already conducted a joint survey to assess the damage. A report has been submitted to the Wadagera tahsildar. Also Read | Bengaluru Farmers Selling Mangoes Online with Help from Government Portal
Activist Ningu Jadi said, “The authorities should do a proper and detailed survey to understand the full extent of the losses faced by farmers.”
