India will export 8,606 tonnes of raw cane sugar to the US in 2024
The government announced on Wednesday that it will export 8,606 tonnes of raw cane sugar to the United States under the tariff-rate quota (TRQ) scheme in fiscal year 2024. Customs duties on TRQ shipments are relatively low. After the quota is reached, additional imports are subject to a higher tariff.
“The quantity of 8,606 MTRV raw cane sugar to be exported to the USA under the TRQ scheme from October 1, 2023, to September 30, 2024, has been notified,” said the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) in a public notice.
India, the world’s second-largest producer and largest consumer of sugar, also has a preferential quota arrangement with the European Union for sugar exports. According to the DGFT, the quota will be managed by the Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced in July 2023 the country-specific (including from India) and first-come, first-served in-quota allocations of the TRQs on imported raw cane sugar, refined and specialty sugar, and sugar-containing products for Fiscal Year 2024 (October 1, 2023–September 30, 2024).
TRQs allow countries to export specified quantities of a product to the US at a low tariff, but all imports of the product above a predetermined threshold are subject to a higher tariff.
