Dragon fruit, which is high in fiber and minerals, has been exported for the first time to the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Bahrain, sourced from Gujarat and West Bengal.

‘The Dragon Fruit consignment which is exported to London was sourced from farmers in the Kutch region of Gujrat, and was exported from Bharuch district of Gujarat, by an Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) registered packhouse.

This is from an official release issued by the Commerce & Industry Ministry on Tuesday, the consignment to Bahrain was sourced from farmers in West Midnapore (West Bengal) and exported by APEDA registered enterprises in Kolkata.

An APEDA-recognized exporter shipped a consignment of ‘dragon fruit’ sourced from farmers in the Sangli district of Maharastra to Dubai in June of this year.

Southern Mexico and Central America origin ‘dragon fruit’ has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its high export value and has been taken up for cultivation by farmers in various states.

Dragon fruit comes in three varieties: white flesh with pink skin, red flesh with pink skin, and white flesh with yellow skin. Customers prefer the red and white-fleshed varieties.

Dragon fruit is primarily grown in the Indian states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. According to the release, West Bengal has also begun cultivating Dragon fruits.
