Walmart Foundation confirmed a ₹4 crores grant to ICRISAT to reach 24,000 farmers

The Walmart Foundation has officially confirmed a ₹4 crores grant to the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT).

The money will aid the Hyderabad-based agricultural research center and its partner organizations in supporting farmers in coping with supply chain disruptions caused by the Covid epidemic.

‘Ahead of the post-harvest period in India, the funding will assist farmers in mitigating interruptions in the post-production supply chain while securing market access,’ stated the Walmart Foundation in an announcement.

‘By improving the activities and reach of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), it would also assist fulfill their financial requirements to acquire important inputs such as seeds and key agricultural equipment,’ it stated.

To collaborate with 8 additional organizations

To scale up their operations on the ground, ICRISAT will collaborate with eight other organisations, including Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN), TrickleUp, Grameen Foundation India, and Digital Green India.

‘We are going to expand our focus on digital connectivity, business practices, logistical support, and high-quality inputs to grow the small-scale farming communities in India,’ said Kathleen McLaughlin, President of Walmart Foundation and Executive Vice-President and Chief Sustainability Officer of Walmart Inc.

Govt permits ICRISAT conditional utilization of drones for agricultural research

‘This Walmart Foundation funding will benefit almost 24,000 farmers in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh,’ stated Jacqueline Hughes, Director General of ICRISAT.

In 2018, the Foundation gave ICRISAT a $2 million grant to assist develop a better business model that will improve farmers’ livelihoods.
