Farmers’ organization SKM to organize protest; unlikely to repeat 2020 kind of march to Delhi
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella organization of farm unions that led the 2020–21 farmers’ protest but has since split, announced on Thursday that it will resume its agitation, which was halted following the repeal of three contentious farm laws. However, it was stated that the SKM may not organize a march to Delhi.
The announcement came a day after the SKM general body met, and it coincided with a Punjab and Haryana High Court order directing the Haryana government to remove blockades on the Punjab-Haryana border that prevented protesting Punjab farmers from marching to Delhi. As a result, another group of farmers, under the SKM (non-political) banner, has been protesting at two border points on the Punjab side of the border since February.
Demands
The leaders told the media that they would seek appointments to meet with the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha MPs from July 16 to 18. They intend to present a memorandum outlining their demands.
The SKM aims for comprehensive crop insurance coverage, a monthly pension of ₹10,000 for farmers and agricultural workers, and the implementation of the 2013 land acquisition law.
