Onion farmers in Gujarat will get ₹ 200 per quintal from the government after a bumper crop in the state. This was announced on Monday.
As fresh onions flooded the markets in Saurashtra, a key onion-growing area in the state, prices started going down, making farmers unhappy.
Raghavji Patel, the Gujarat Agriculture Minister, said on Monday that farmers will get financial help of ₹ 2 per kg or ₹ 200 per quintal, up to a maximum of ₹ 50,000 per farmer.

‘During this rabi season, about 88,000 hectares of land in the State were used to grow onions. This has caused this year’s production to be above average and a lot of goods to show up at the markets. Since April 1, prices for onions have been going down’ Patel also said that growers and farmer groups had complained to the government many times about how low onion prices were making them.
Last year, during the rabi season, onions were grown on a total of 60,000 hectares, and an estimated 17,67 lakh tonnes were made. During the rabi season of 2021-22, about 88,100 hectares are expected to be planted, while the output of 23.92 lakh tonnes is about 35% higher.
Prices for onions at the Mahuva market in Bhavnagar district, which is a center for the onion trade in the state, hit a low of ₹ 200 per quintal for red onions and ₹ 310 per quintal for white onions on May 9, when 28,392 bags of 50 kg of red onions and 72,338 bags of white onions arrived. Last year at this time, prices were between ₹ 975 and ₹ 1,095 per quintal at the very least.
