Mekedatu Issue – around 500 Tamil Nadu farmers will protest in Delhi-Ayyakannu
Tamizhaga Cauvery Vivasaigal Sangam general secretary PR Pandian slammed the Congress party on Wednesday after the party’s Karnataka chapter conducted a padayatra seeking the construction of a dam at Mekedatu.
The farmers’ group led a protest rally from Tiruvarur to Thanjavur, Namakkal, and Salem before arriving in Krishnagiri district late Tuesday night.
The next morning, approximately 170 farmers set out from Arasanatti for Karnataka but were halted by Tamil Nadu police near the boundary in Zuzuvadi. Pandian stated during the rally in Hosur, ‘The Tamil Nadu government should convene an all-party meeting to address this issue as soon as possible. Because of their cooperation, the DMK should challenge Congress over the padayatra, and Chief Minister MK Stalin should not remain silent.’
He also criticized the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee for failing to oppose the activities of its equivalent (the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee).
‘In order to reclaim political power, the Congress party in Karnataka, led by DK Shivakumar, has been lobbying the Centre and the State to build a dam across the Cauvery at Mekedatu,’ he claimed. Stalin should intercede and restore Cauvery’s rights, he argued.
Meanwhile, Desiya Thennindhiya Nadhigal Inaippu Vivasayigal Sangam State President P Ayyakannu claimed in Tiuchy that around 500 Tamil Nadu farmers will protest in Delhi over plans to build a new dam at Mekedatu. ‘The protest date will be declared at the upcoming State executives meeting on January 21,’ Ayyakannu added.
