Kharif sowing tomato, potato, and onion are at comfortable levels as the previous year.

This Kharif season, planting of tomato, potato, and onion is at comfortable levels, with area acreage under cultivation for these commodities remaining at previous year’s levels, according to a senior official at the agricultural and farmers’ welfare ministry.

According to ministry data, the total area sown with onion in the five key production states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Madhya Pradesh was 26,840 hectares as of July 5, compared to 26,670 hectares in the same period in 2021.

As of July 5, the total area sown with Kharif potato in the top five states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu was 36,120 hectares, up from 36,510 hectares the previous year.

As of July 5, the total area under Kharif tomato cultivation in the top ten producer states was 58,750 hectares, up from 50,990 hectares the previous year. This represents roughly 23% of the target area.
