The Indian Council of Agricultural Agricultural Research (ICAR) has awarded Dr. Kajal Chakraborty, Principal Scientist of the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), the Norman Borlaug National Award for Excellence in Agricultural Research.
He was recognized for his work on the development of a line of nutraceutical products derived from seaweeds that can be used to treat a variety of lifestyle disorders, including diabetes.
The award comes with a monetary prize of Rs10 lakh and is given out once every five years. Aside from that, the scientist would receive a Rs 1.5 crore research grant to carry out a five-year demanding research project.

Chakraborty’s scientific accomplishments include the development and commercialization of nutraceutical products derived from chosen seaweeds to treat rheumatoid arthritis, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and hypothyroidism.
Antiosteoporotic and immune-boost nutraceuticals are among the most recent attempts in this field, with the latter receiving increased attention in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic.
His research group created a heterotrophic bacterial antimicrobial treatment product for use against multi-resistant Gram-negative infections.
Dr. Kajal Chakraborty has also been selected for the Department of Biotechnology’s Biotech Product, Process Development, and Commercialization Award 2020. India’s Government.
