As the Omicron version of the novel coronavirus produces more Covid-19 cases around the world, recent research reveals cannabis chemicals may be able to prevent infection from the virus that causes Covid-19. The study says the presence of chemical components in hemp can keep the virus from infiltrating healthy human cells.

The study, led by experts from Oregon State University’s Global Hemp Innovation Center, College of Pharmacy, and Linus Pauling Institute, was published in the Journal of Natural Products. The researchers make no claims that smoking cannabis or pot will keep you safe from Covid-19. The research focuses on two chemicals found in cannabis.

‘Because this is a lab study, it hasn’t been tested clinically,’ said senior author Fikadu Tafesse, Ph.D., assistant professor of molecular microbiology and immunology at OHSU. ‘However, the study’s consequence is that some hemp-based consumer products have the ability to both prevent and treat infection with the new coronavirus.’

‘These cannabinoid acids are plentiful in hemp and various hemp preparations. They have not restricted chemicals like THC (THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis), the psychoactive element in marijuana, and have a low risk of toxicity in humans.

Furthermore, our research found that hemp chemicals were similarly efficient against SARS-CoV-2 variants, including version B.1.1.7, which was discovered in the United Kingdom, and variant B.1.351, which was discovered in South Africa.’ According to Breemen.
