For the first time, a shipment of Nagaland’s ‘Raja Mircha,’ also known as King Chilli or Bhoot Jolokia, was shipped to London.
According to an official release from the Commerce & Industry Ministry on Wednesday, ‘this is a significant boost to exports of Geographical Indications (GI) products from the north-eastern region.’
A geographical indication (GI) is a symbol that is used on products that have a particular geographic provenance and have qualities or a credibility that are attributed to that origin.

In June and July, the Agriculture and Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) collaborated with the Nagaland State Agricultural Marketing Board to send samples for laboratory testing, and the results were encouraging because it is grown organically.
The shipment of King Chilli, also known as the world’s hottest based on Scoville Heat Units (SHUs), was procured from Tening, Nagaland, and packed at an APEDA-assisted packhouse in Guwahati, as per the statement.
The release stated that exporting fresh King Chilli was difficult due to its highly perishable nature.
APEDA supported the export of Tripura jackfruit to London and Germany in 2021, as well as Assam lemon, Assam red rice, and Leteku ‘Burmese grape’ to Dubai.
