Why is National Farmers Day observed every year on December 23 in India?
To mark the birth anniversary of the fifth Prime Minister, Choudhary Charan Singh, India celebrates National Farmers Day, or Kisan Divas every year on December 23. Choudhary Charan Singh, known as the farmer’s leader due to his walk-talk lifestyle, implemented several land reformation policies to improve their lives.
He was born in Noorpur in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh. Between July 28, 1979, and January 14, 1980, he served as the Prime Minister of India. People refer to him as the ‘champion of the peasants of India.’
The government agreed in 2001 to mark the anniversary of Charan Singh’s birth as Kisan Diwas.
As part of the Mahatma Gandhi-motivated Independence movement, Charan Singh entered politics. In 1937, he was appointed to the Legislative Assembly of the United Provinces. He was especially interested in the rules that were bad for the village’s economy. He is lauded for his role in bringing the concerns of small and marginal farmers to the forefront.
From the 1950s onwards, Charan Singh remained notable in Uttar Pradesh after drafting and ensuring the implementation of revolutionary land reform laws. It was in 1959 that he first opposed the “socialistic and collectivist land policies” of then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

In 1967, he defected from Congress and sided with the opposition. He also became Uttar Pradesh’s first non-Congress Chief Minister in 1967 and later in 1970.
In the meantime, in 2021, the Delhi Police refused the Rashtriya Lok Dal permission to pay tribute to Charan Singh in the Kisan Ghat area of central Delhi on his 118th birth anniversary. The ongoing COVID-19 situation was cited by police as the reason behind refusing permission.
