Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on 25th December issued more than Rs 18,000 crore to more than 9 crore farming families under “Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi” (PM-KISAN).
Modi approved the transfer of money with the press of a button at a function that the ruling BJP has turned into a mega exercise to reach out to farmers by making their leaders connect with the farming community at more than 19,000 places across the nation and listen to the message of the prime minister as well.
On the birth anniversary of former prime minister and BJP stalwart Shri. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, which is celebrated every year on 25th December by the ruling party as “Good Governance Day”, Modi released the instalment of Rs 2,000 to each farmer.
Under the PM-KISAN scheme, small and marginal farmers are provided with a monetary benefit of Rs 6,000 per year, payable in three equal instalments of Rs 2,000 each. The money is transferred directly to the beneficiaries’ bank accounts.
This programme comes amid the mounting protests by various farmers’ unions against farm laws recently implemented by the Central government.
The government has suggested that these changes are in the interests of farmers.
