Bengaluru Farmers Selling Mangoes Online with Help from Government Portal
In 2018, the Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation Limited (KSMDMCL) launched a special website to help farmers sell mangoes directly to customers. This helped farmers avoid middlemen and earn better profits.
The website became very popular, and many farmers were encouraged to start their own online stores. One such farmer is Bhaskar Reddy, who grows nearly 20 types of mangoes on his farm near Kolar. He started his website, www.kolarmangoes.com, three years ago and now sells around 10 tonnes of mangoes every year through it. He has built a strong customer base, with nearly 1,000 people ordering from his site annually.
KSMDMCL officials say that having personal websites helps farmers grow their businesses and keep loyal customers. Also Read | Karnataka’s GI tagged Appemidi pickled mango has export potential.
Sales on both government website and website
Another farmer, Aruna Anjanappa from Gouribidanur, runs www.kempegowdamangofarm.com. She says that selling mangoes online has greatly increased their sales. “We sell mangoes both through the government website and our own. Every week, we sell 200 to 300 boxes, each weighing 3 kilograms,” she said.
Farmers also mentioned that having their own websites allows them to sell mangoes for a longer time. The government website is open only during the main mango season. “Even though the government portal hasn’t started yet, I began getting orders on April 1 through my website. There’s been a huge demand,” Reddy shared.
Government Mango Portal to Open Soon
KSMDMCL is getting ready to launch its mango sales website next week, likely on Monday. Orders placed on the site will be delivered by India Post.
Customers can choose from nearly 20 different types of mangoes, which will be shipped directly from the farmers.
