Farmers’ organization SKM to organize protest; unlikely to repeat 2020 kind of march to Delhi

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella organization of farm unions that led the 2020–21 farmers’ protest but has since split, announced on Thursday that it will resume its agitation, which was halted following the repeal of three contentious farm laws. However, it was stated that the SKM may not organize a march to Delhi.

The announcement came a day after the SKM general body met, and it coincided with a Punjab and Haryana High Court order directing the Haryana government to remove blockades on the Punjab-Haryana border that prevented protesting Punjab farmers from marching to Delhi. As a result, another group of farmers, under the SKM (non-political) banner, has been protesting at two border points on the Punjab side of the border since February.

SKM leaders have announced that they will focus on nationwide protests, particularly in assembly election-bound states like Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Haryana. “It is not necessary to use the same method of protest each time. “We will hold protests throughout the country,” said Hannan Mollah of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS).

Demands

The leaders told the media that they would seek appointments to meet with the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha MPs from July 16 to 18. They intend to present a memorandum outlining their demands.

The SKM General Body approved a charter of demands, which included ensuring a legally guaranteed minimum support price (MSP) based on the “C2+50 percent” formula with guaranteed procurement for all crops. No privatization of the power sector and no implementation of prepaid smart meters, restitution to all families of those who died during the farmers’ movement; and withdrawal of all cases related to the 2020 farmers’ agitation against (now repealed) farm laws.
