Poultry industry to seek cut in import duty on maize, soyabeans: CLFMA

Food scarcity caused by the erratic monsoon is not limited to humans. To address a feed shortage for their flocks, the poultry industry will ask the central government to reduce import duties on maize and soyabean.

The main components of poultry feed are broken rice and maize. The industry is concerned that the price of maize and broken rice will rise in the coming months as the diversion of these two raw materials for ethanol is expected to rise following the ban on the use of sugarcane juice for ethanol.

“We are going to write to the central government and request that the import duty on maize and soyabean be reduced,” said Suresh Deora, chairman of India’s Compound Feed Manufacturers’ Association (CLFMA).

“The soyabean crop in Maharashtra had been damaged by about 30%.” As the government promotes using maize for ethanol, the poultry industry may face difficulties obtaining maize for feed,” he said.

According to Rajesh Jain Paharia, a rice trader, “prices of broken rice have increased by 18% in the last six months, from ₹ 22/kg in June to ₹ 26/kg now.”

In the last six months, there has been an increase in demand for broken rice.”The grain-based distilleries under construction last year will begin production in January. We’re getting a lot of requests for broken rice,” Paharia said. The poultry and ethanol industries have both grown rapidly, whereas maize production has not increased significantly in the last five years.
