Karnataka farmers to benefit from modern irrigation techniques

Netafim India recently held a training and felicitation programme called Pragati in Gadag, Karnataka, aimed at helping farmers from the Singataluru Lift Irrigation Scheme (SLIS-3).

As a provider of smart irrigation solutions, Netafim India designed Pragati to train farmers, share useful knowledge, and recognise those who have adopted best farming practices.

The SLIS-3 project covers over 11,330 hectares, where many farmers have started using modern irrigation techniques like drip systems. They grow a variety of crops including maize, sunflower, green gram, onion, chilli, and flowers.

According to a press release, farmers are now successfully using fertigation—which means delivering nutrients through drip irrigation—tailored to each crop’s needs.

As part of the programme, 30 progressive farmers who have shown success with these methods were selected to receive advanced training. They will also serve as ambassadors of sustainable farming, helping spread these practices within their communities.

During the day-long session, farmers were guided on topics such as the benefits of the project, how to improve yields using drip irrigation, fertigation methods, system maintenance, future crop planning, and the use of digital tools in farming.

At the event, Girish Maraddi, Director of the Water and Land Management Institute (WALMI), said that the Pragati initiative is a great move toward empowering SLIS-3 farmers.

He noted that the hands-on training in drip irrigation, fertigation, and digital farming gives farmers the skills they need to grow better crops, use resources wisely, and farm sustainably.

Girish Deshpande, Assistant General Manager at Netafim, added, “With Pragati, we aim to build a strong community of forward-thinking farmers.

By using drip irrigation and modern techniques, they are not only improving their own results but also encouraging others in the area to switch to sustainable agriculture. Real change happens when farmers learn from each other.”
