ICRISAT scientist M.L. Jat appointed as the new Director-General of ICAR.
The government has appointed Dr. Mangi Lal Jat as the new Director-General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) for a term of three years. He will also serve as the Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), which comes under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
According to an official order, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Dr. Mangi Lal Jat, who is currently Deputy Director General (Research – AI) and Director of the Global Research Program at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in Hyderabad, to the post of Secretary, DARE-cum-Director General, ICAR for three years from the date he takes charge, or until further notice, whichever comes first.”
At present, the Agriculture Secretary is handling the responsibilities of DG, ICAR and Secretary, DARE, following the retirement of Himanshu Pathak. Dr. Pathak took voluntary retirement from ICAR and joined ICRISAT as Director General on March 6.
In general, agricultural scientists in ICAR can work until they are 62 years old. However, the Director-General of ICAR, who also acts as Secretary of DARE, can serve only until the age of 60. Also Read | ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research Kozhikode has a new director.
