The government purchased 25,000 tonnes of onion as a buffer stock, keeping domestic prices stable.
Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh announced on Monday that the government has purchased 25,000 tonnes of onion grown in the 2023 kharif season to maintain a buffer stock. The government is buying onions to keep a buffer stock and to use for market intervention to increase domestic availability and keep prices stable.
The government has increased the buffer stock target for the fiscal year 2023-24 to 7 lakh tonnes, up from 3 lakh tonnes last year.
According to the Secretary, the government purchased 5 lakh tonnes of rabi onion last year and is currently purchasing 2 lakh tonnes of kharif onion as the buffer stock target has been increased.

The government has offloaded 3.04 lakh tonnes of rabi onion into the market through cooperative Nafed and NCCF of the 5 lakh tonnes in buffer stock.
As a result, the all-India average retail price of onion has dropped by 27.58% to ₹ 42 per kg in less than a month, he added. To prevent sharp price increases, the government has banned onion exports until March 31.
