Spices Board India Warns Against Illegal Cardamom Auctions

The Spices Board of India has cautioned the public against taking part in unauthorized cardamom auctions, saying such activities violate the Cardamom (Licensing & Marketing) Rules, 1987, and will invite strict legal action.

According to the Board, some firms and even licensed dealers have been conducting auctions without valid approval. As per the rules, only those with a proper licence from the Spices Board can operate as auctioneers or dealers. Even licensed auctioneers are permitted to conduct sales only at locations, dates, and times approved by the Board. Also Read | Group of female cardamom farmers founded cardamom auction company

The Board stressed that illegal auctions hurt authorized auctioneers and cardamom farmers by reducing transparency and fair trade. Licensed dealers are also required to buy cardamom only from registered growers, estate owners, or approved auctioneers.

At present, official cardamom auctions are held at e-auction centers in Puttady (Kerala) and Bodinayakanur (Tamil Nadu), along with approved manual auction centers in other states.

The public and stakeholders are advised to check the list of authorized auctioneers on the Spices Board’s website and take part only in legitimate auctions, the press release added.
