Coorg Coffee Growers Eye Australian Market for Expansion
Biota Coorg Farmer Producer Company Ltd, a collective supporting small and medium coffee growers in India’s largest coffee-producing district, Kodagu, is actively seeking to expand its export reach into Australia. The company, which helps its 122 grower members by collectively processing and marketing their coffee, aims to boost earnings through value addition and international sales.
Biota CEO, K.K. Vishwanath, recently met with Steven Connolly, the Deputy Consul-General of the Australian Consulate General in Bengaluru, during his visit to Kodagu. Vishwanath has requested assistance in connecting with key stakeholders in the Australian coffee industry. Also Read | India’s Coffee Exports Rise 19% in Q1 FY25 to $616 Million
“We propose to hold virtual cupping sessions and seek introductions to potential marketing and promotional partners in Australia to enhance our brand visibility,” Vishwanath stated. He also highlighted Biota’s commitment to sustainability, noting that 50% of its members’ farms are already Rainforest Alliance certified, with the remaining farms in the process of obtaining certification. Furthermore, coffees produced by Biota members are compliant with the proposed European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) norms.
Biota currently exports coffee to a range of countries including the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany, and Portugal. The farmers’ collective exported approximately 80 tonnes of coffee last year and is targeting an increase to over 100 tonnes this year. Beyond expanding its market, Biota is also focused on developing a strong brand for its coffees, leveraging the unique ecological and environmental advantages of the Kodagu district.
