Farmers in Telangana urged govt to revise and buy the entire rubi Jowar

Even as the Telangana government announced the purchase of Jowar (sorghum) produced during the rabi season, farmers in the state urged that the government buy the whole crop, eliminating the 5.16 quintals per acre cap.

‘The government’s decision to cap purchases at 5.16 quintals per acre is unjust. Farmers have reaped 11-15 quintals in districts such as Adilabad and Vikarabad,’ according to the Rythu Swarajya Vedika, an umbrella organization of farmers’ associations, NGOs, and farm scientists.

With market prices falling below MSP, the State Government has authorized Markfed to purchase around 65,000 tonnes harvested during the last rabi season at ₹ 2,970 per quintal. It has offered Markfed a ₹ 230-crore bank guarantee for the transaction.

It is expected that approximately one lakh farmers planted rainfed crops on approximately 51,400 hectares during the rabi season, compared to the rabi average of 35,600 hectares.

The group pointed out that the government offered to buy 1.31 lakh tonnes of Jowar harvested during the 2021-22 rabi season last year as well.

‘They said they’d buy 10.44 quintals per acre, but ended up buying only 25,786 tonnes, miserably missing the target,’ it said.

The association has petitioned the government to boost the per-acre purchase limit and bail out the farmers.
