After Article 370 was removed in 2020, there was a 53.8% increase in the building of cold storage facilities in Jammu and Kashmir.

In response to a question in Rajya Sabha on Friday, Narendra Singh Tomar, the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, said that in Jammu and Kashmir, 21 cold storages with a total capacity of 99,555 tonnes have been built since Article 370 was thrown out.

US Department of Agriculture estimate

In a recent report called “Fresh Deciduous Fruit Annual,” the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service said that India’s apple production for the marketing year 2022-23 would be 2.35 million tonnes (mt). About 70% of the apples grown in India are expected to come from Jammu and Kashmir, and about 20% will come from Himachal Pradesh.

The report said that there was enough rain during the flowering and fruit-setting stages of the monsoon in 2022, which led to a good harvest with strong market arrivals.

In Jammu and Kashmir, apples are moved around a lot after they have been picked. Cold storage is a big part of this.

Tomar said that the price of apples in Kashmir went down because this year there was a big crop of apples and the fruit was sold a few days early because it was warm. So, because there were no rules and more apples in the mandis, apple prices went down.

He said that traffic is sometimes stopped because the National Highway (NH) is under construction. This also affects prices in some way. He said that NH gets hurt or broken because of natural disasters. So, it needs to be fixed every now and then, which stops traffic.
