ICAR-CIFT & ICICI Foundation teamed up for rural fishery, livelihood security
ICAR-CIFT (Central Institute of Fisheries Technology) and the ICICI Foundation have teamed up to guarantee maximum exploitation of rural resources, particularly in the fisheries area, for rural livelihood security.
The ICICI Foundation, the CSR arm of the ICICI Group, is developing an integrated fisheries value chain initiative in Kerala’s Alappuzha district, focused on 10,000 farmers. The emphasis would be on enhancing the quality and quantity of food, as well as giving economic possibilities and encouraging sustainable practices to the beneficiaries, who are local fishermen.

The Foundation seeks to promote sustainable livelihoods by expanding value chains and focusing on market connections, collaboration with government agencies, capacity building, and so on. The initiatives are organized around four strategic pillars: scarcity, excess, inclusiveness, and the environment.
In its function, CIFT will provide all technical training, advice, and support to the project’s designated beneficiaries.
An MOU signed
An MOU was signed in Kochi between Suketu Kumar, Programme Head, ICICI Foundation, and Leela Edwin, Director, ICAR-CIFT, to make the project operational. Leela Edwin stressed the need of implementing the project in an eco-friendly manner and with a holistic approach.

The ICICI Foundation’s fish value chain project, with CIFT and CUSAT as technical partners, will be implemented initially in Alappuzha’s Pattanakkadu and Thykkattusserry block Panchayaths, with a focus on improving fish cultivation practices through scientific practices incremental income through value-added products, providing market access, and establishing micro-enterprises.
