The World Spice Organization hosts the first National Spice Conference in Mumbai.

On October 6 and 7, the World Spice Organization (WSO), a non-profit technical partner of the All-India Spices Exporters Forum (AISEF), will host the first National Spice Conference in Mumbai.

The event is being organized by WSO in collaboration with the German development agency GIZ and IDH—the Sustainable Trade Initiative. The heads of Indian regulatory bodies, FSSAI and IISR, as well as scientists from national research organizations and senior executives from spice-related enterprises, will attend the conference, which will be hosted at the Holiday Inn Mumbai International Airport. International NGOs working on sustainable agriculture will also be represented.

Concentrate on food-safe spices

The two-day conference will also cover the latest advancements in food safety regulations, changing consumer behavior and demand patterns, ground-level challenges for sustainability and biodiversity, innovations and new trends in value chain partnerships, trends that may ultimately lead to trade entry and exit barriers, and strict and long-standing safety standards.

Cutting-edge technologies and other innovations that help the spice business at the farm and processing levels will be discussed.

WSO Chairman Ramkumar Menon stated, ‘India is the world’s top producer, exporter, and consumer of spices, accounting for more than 48% of worldwide demand. India’s spice exports have been growing and are predicted to reach $1.6 billion in the April-August 2022 quarter. However, new worldwide safety, sustainability, and traceability criteria are posing a challenge to the sector.’

Further, he said, ‘Approximately 85% of all spices produced in India are eaten in the country. As a result, it is vital to ensure that high-quality spices are traded within India. We wish to demonstrate the importance of food safety in general, and specifically for spices, through the National Spice Conference.’

The WSO event intends to bring together farmer producers’ organizations (FPOs) representing about 20,000 farmers for food safety awareness and collaboration. Quality and food safety measures are also being aligned with Codex and international standards.

The event seeks to educate farmers on the value of sustainable spice production and quality assurance (QA) for increased marketability.
