Telangana announced to farmers not to engage in paddy cultivation

Centre’s refusal to buy paddy from Telangana state, The stste government announced to the farmers not to plant paddy

A day after the Modi government informed the Telangana state government that it would no longer purchase parboiled rice from State this year and advised farmers not to cultivate paddy during the rabi season, the State government has made an announcement to farmers not to engage in paddy cultivation during the rabi season.

On Saturday, Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar and Director General of Police M. Mahender Reddy held a video conference with all District Collectors, Superintendents of Police, Commissioners of Police, Additional Collectors, District Agriculture Officers, District Supply Officers, and others to discuss the procurement of paddy for the recent Kharif season and to educate farmers about not planting paddy this rabi season.

As a result, it had become imperative for the farming community not to engage in paddy cultivation during the rabi season. Farmers who have agreements with seed companies or rice millers, on the other hand, may cultivate paddy in rabi. Furthermore, farmers could grow the crop for their own consumption or at their own risk.

On the ongoing procurement of paddy produce in Kharif season, the Chief Secretary directed officials to expedite the process. He directed the District Collectors (DCs) to ensure a smooth procurement process and to make a decision on the establishment of paddy procurement centers (PPCs) as needed. He also instructed Collectors and other senior officers to visit PPCs on a regular basis to resolve any issues that arose.

No paddy from other states

The Chief Secretary also alerted officials against permitting paddy from bordering states, stating that certain incidences of paddy from other states had already been observed at PPCs. He directed Collectors, SPs, and CPs to make certain that no outside paddy is purchased or produced in Telangana PPCs.

He claimed that allowing paddy from other states into Telangana PPCs would be problematic to the state’s farmers. He also asserted that the Centre had indicated that only 40 lakh tonnes of raw rice from the recent Kharif season would be lifted.

The Chief Secretary directed the Collectors to help speed up the milling of paddy purchased at PPCs in order to process it as custom milled rice (CMR). It is also critical to dispatch CMR immediately after processing to ensure that there is sufficient space for paddy stock arriving from PPCs.
