Samyukta Kisan Morcha, rejects MSP committee formed by government

Samyukta Kisan Morcha rejects the MSP committee formed by the government.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), which is a group of farmers’ unions, has said that it doesn’t agree with the minimum support price (MSP) committee that the government set up to solve agricultural problems.

In response to a question in Parliament, the government said that three spots on the committee are still open for SKM members. The SKM, on the other hand, refused to join the committee.

‘The people who supported the three farm laws have been put on a committee that the government has set up. We have three open seats, and the other members are close to BJP and RSS. Why should we join this group?’ asked SKM member Yogendra Yadav.

‘The main thing the SKM wanted, which was why the committee was supposed to be set up, and which hasn’t been mentioned anywhere, is that laws should be made to protect MSPs. What’s the point of the MSP committee if they can’t figure out what the farmer unions really want?’ said Yogendra Yadav.

In November of last year, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that three farm laws would be thrown out, he said that he would set up a committee to talk about the farmers’ need for a legal guarantee on MSP.

However, Hannan Mollah, SKM member, and a farmer union leader said, ‘There is no chance that members of SKM will go to the committee. We say no to the committee right away because there are already more BJP members on it.’

Bharatiya Kisan Union (Asali) spokesman Prabal Pratap Shahi said that more seats should be given to SKM members to make the committee more acceptable.

‘Only three seats are for SKM, and the rest are for people who voted for the harsh farm laws. This doesn’t help us because committees like this only work when the majority votes yes. How can we be heard if we are the minority on the committee? Also, there is no law that talks about MSP guarantee’ he said.
