Quickly, adequately compensate piggery farmers in Wayanad : Rahul Gandhi

Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi has urged the state government to move quickly to compensate farmers in the area for the large killing of their pigs to combat the spread of African swine disease.

Mr. Gandhi stated in a letter to the Minister for Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, and Milk Co-operatives, J. Chinchu Rani, that pig breeding has offered an extra source of income in a region where agriculture sector had been particularly severely hit by irregular weather and natural calamities.

‘Many farmers have taken out loans to start or develop their piggery businesses. However, the illness outbreak has not only wrecked their hopes but has also pushed them farther into debt,’ Mr. Gandhi added.

Mr. Gandhi stated that the Thavinhal grama panchayat authorities had attracted the MP’s attention to the farmers’ extreme hardship as a result of the insufficiency of the government-mandated compensation rate in comparison to market rates. To keep the disease at bay, almost 380 pigs were slaughtered in one grama panchayat alone, he noted.

As a result, Mr. Gandhi believes that the State government should step in and ensure that enough compensation is paid in a timely manner.
