The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), credited with making India’s marine products a global brand that has endured in the face of fierce competition, has completed five decades highlighted by breakthroughs and enhanced infrastructure. It has given a significant boost to the fisheries sector in the country’s coastal states.

MPEDA, established in 1972 as a statutory body of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, is gearing up to celebrate its Golden Jubilee, with India’s marine exports reaching 1.4 million tonnes (Rs 57,586 crores) as opposed to just 35,523 tonnes in 1972, and the delectable products gaining approval from seafood gourmets worldwide.

Anupriya Patel, Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, will kick off the event on August 24. The MPEDA Export Awards and the Champions trophy of the MPEDA Golden Jubilee Marine Quest 2022 will also be presented during the event.

According to MPEDA Chairman Dodda Venkata Swamy, the Golden Jubilee coincides with the organization’s ongoing efforts to capitalize on the milestones reflected in its primary focus on capturing fisheries, value-added products, and market promotion, as well as establishing a pan-India network and reinvigorating quality and sustainability.

Further, he added that ‘we are prepared to hold the biennial India International Seafood Show for the 23rd time (IISS). The event in Kolkata in February 2023 will give a great venue for interaction between Indian exporters and buyers of Indian marine products,’ he added.

Plan for Export Development

MPEDA has chosen to construct an export development strategy with the goal of achieving $20 billion in exports over the next five years. ‘A growth rate of roughly 15% will be required. To accomplish this aim, we must maintain and increase growth,’ he stated.

To meet this goal, MPEDA intends to identify around 20 export markets that account for roughly 90% of total exports and assign each market to an officer tasked with assessing the export potential and monitoring market changes. Other objectives include the publication of a monthly market report and the creation of a buyers’ directory for distribution among exporters.

States play an important role in the implementation of MPEDA’s numerous operations. Our top priority would be to develop a state-by-state export development strategy in collaboration with states. The organization is considering identifying entrepreneurs to export fish to Russia in rupees.

MPEDA has established three allied bodies to broaden its programs and activities, including the RGCA (Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture) at Sirkali in Tamil Nadu, which promotes diversified aquaculture such as seabass, mud crab, and GIFT (Tilapia), and is also involved in the revival of Black Tiger shrimp in Andaman.
