Millets have been given a full group standard by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). It has told Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Second Amendment Regulations, 2023. A government statement said that the rules would go into effect on September 1.

In the Food Safety and Standards (Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011, only a few millets, like jowar, ragi, bajra, and amaranth, have their own standards.

‘FSSAI has now set up a comprehensive group standard for 15 types of millets with 8 quality parameters, such as maximum limits for moisture content, uric acid content, extraneous matter, other edible grains, defects, weevilled grains, and immature and shrivelled grains, so that good quality (standardized) millets are available on domestic and international markets,’ said an official statement.

The group standard applies to barnyard millet, Amaranthus, Buckwheat, Finger Millet, Foxtail Millet, Pearl Millet, Fonio, Little Millet, and Sorghum, among other things.

This is happening at a time when the International Year of Millets 2023 was a chance to boost production around the world, make processing more efficient, make better use of crop rotation, and promote millets as an important part of the food basket.

Millets are a group of small-grain cereal crops that do well in drought and other harsh weather conditions and need little help from chemicals like fertilisers and pesticides. Most millet crops are grown in India, and the statement said that they give people most of the nutrients they need to stay healthy.
