Many of the foods we thought were vegetables are actually fruit!

The Natural Fruit Group is a large part of our daily diet. It’s astounding to know that many of the foods we thought were vegetables are actually a fruit! The bioscience definition of fruit is a seed-bearing part of flowering plants or trees that can be used as food.

According to these standards, vegetables such as avocados, cucumbers, squash, and, yes, tomatoes are all fruit. From a cooking point of view, a fruit is usually thought of as any sweet-tasting plant with seeds, whereas a vegetable is any tasty or less sweet-tasting plant.

Fruit Types

Fruits may be consumed raw, frozen, stewed, cooked, or dried. All-natural fruits can be sorted into three main groups: simple, aggregate, or multiple.

Simple Fruits: fruit that has grown from a single flower. These fruit groups may be either fleshy, like plums and peaches, or dry, like walnuts and hazelnuts.

Fruits aggregate: a fruit formed from several ovaries of a single flower that produces many tiny fruits that are tightly clustered together in a bunch.

Multiple Fruits: fruit formed by the merging of the ovaries of many different flowers, which develop closely together to form one larger fruit.

False fruits or accessories: are another type of fruit that is formed not from the ovaries, but from different parts of the flower. These fruits may be simple, aggregated, or multiple fruits. For example, strawberries would be considered one of the aggregate fruit, as well as an accessory fruit, since much of the fleshy fruit does not come from the ovaries.

Examples of fruit

The fruit group may be fleshy, like tomatoes or peaches, or dry, like coconuts or peanuts. They may have many seeds in them, such as cantaloupe and watermelon, or they may have one seed in them, such as avocados, almonds, and cherries.

Fruits can be very large, like pumpkins, or very small, like blueberries. Here are a few examples of each type of fruit. Simple fruits may include fruit such as apples, pears, plums, tomatoes, peaches. Fruits may include fruits such as raspberries, blackberries, strawberries. Multiple fruits may include fruits such as pineapples, figs, breadfruit, mulberries.
