Mangaluru, in Coastal Karnataka, was the hottest place in the country on Wednesday, with a high of 38.8 degrees Celsius. This was mostly still the case on Thursday when the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that many parts of Goa and Coastal Karnataka had temperatures between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius.
In some parts of Saurashtra, Kutch, and Vidarbha, the weather was the same. The highest temperatures were between 35 and 37 degrees Celsius in East Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Konkan, Saurashtra, Kutch, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Rayalaseema, and West Madhya Pradesh.

Conditions of a heat wave
Some parts of South Konkan, Goa, and Coastal Karnataka may also be affected by a heat wave on Friday. But at 3.30 p.m. on Thursday, satellite images showed that clouds from a western disturbance were settling over the Western Himalayas and neighbouring Nepal. They were also moving into the plains over Moradabad, Bareilly, Aligarh, Farrukhabad, Sitpur, and Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Aligarh, Farrukhabad, and Jaipur, all in East Rajasthan, said they had seen light rain.
At the same time, a large and growing band of clouds covered parts of the South Peninsula and stretched east-northeast from Coastal and North Interior Karnataka through Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Coastal Odisha and West Bengal, Mizoram, and Tripura. Clouds may have helped keep the temperature down in Mangaluru on Thursday evening.
It helps other cities
Other cities benefiting from the cloud cover included Madikeri, Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, Davangere, Tumakuru, Bengaluru, Bellari, Guntakal, Anantapur, Kurnool, Tirupati, Vellore, Chennai, Gudur, Nandyala, Guntur, Vijayawada, Eluru, Kakinada, Rajahmundry, Visakhapatnam, Brahmapur, Puri, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Balasore and Digha.
Meanwhile, the western disturbance that was bringing cooler weather moved further east. By late Thursday afternoon, its underbelly had moved from Karnataka to Bhopal and the area around it in Madhya Pradesh.
North-West Madhya Pradesh was also affected by a cyclonic flow. Together, they would cause isolated light rain, thunderstorms, and lightning on Thursday in Uttarakhand, South Uttar Pradesh, North-East Rajasthan, and North Madhya Pradesh.

Fresh western disturbance
From Thursday to Saturday, the same thing will happen over Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, the plains of West Bengal, and Odisha. From Thursday to Monday, the same thing will happen over the hills of West Bengal, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. From Sunday night to Tuesday, isolated or scattered rain and thunderstorms are likely over the hills of North-West India because of a new western disturbance.
Over Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, the hills of West Bengal and Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, it is likely that there will be isolated to scattered light rain from Tuesday to Thursday.
