Kolar farmers launch online portal for door-to-door mango delivery service

On Thursday, Kolar Mangoes, in collaboration with the Department of Posts, started a convenient, door-to-door mango delivery service at the Bengaluru General Post Office. The online mango delivery venture (website) is owned by the Reddy brothers, Mr. Chandra Reddy and Bhaskar Reddy, who are based out of Srinivaspura taluk, Kolar district of Karnataka, which is one of the top mango producers in India.

Mr. Bhaskar Reddy, who is a diploma holder in horticulture, spoke with agrinews this morning and said that they started this venture just prior to COVID-19 to help the Kolar mango growers get the right price for their produce. The sale was good in pandemic but dropped slightly after that.

Both brothers together own land. In addition to this, they have their relatives and neighbors who have joined them. Further, Mr. Reddy said that they are planning to add millet products in the near future.

Mr. Bhaskar Reddy said that they currently have six kinds of fruit, including Alphonso, Banganapalle, Imam Pasand, Senthoora, Kesar, Mallika, and Penish.

‘In the following months, we will have roughly 22 types,’ he stated. The price of the mangoes varies depending on the variety, with a beginning price of ₹150 per kg and a box containing roughly three kg.

The Genesis

‘During the season, we produce 1,000-3,000 tonnes of mango in Srinivaspura,’ said Chandra Reddy, head of the Kolar District Mango Growers and Marketing Association. During the lockdown in 2020, Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation Ltd. (KSMDMCL) launched Karisiri, a door-to-door mango delivery service, he added. ‘We farmers got more cognizant of the industry over time.’ ‘We decided to create our own business,’ he added.

The primary difference between Karisiri and Kolar Mangoes, he claims, is that Karisiri only starts operating when there is a large yield. ‘They wait until they get 1,000 to 2,000 orders every day, while we make deliveries even if we only get 10 orders a day,’ Mr. Chandra Reddy explained.

Neighboring States

Mr. Bhaskar Reddy explained that the Kolar Mangoes also sources mangoes from neighboring Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. ‘The Mango Board wanted to wait until all of the farmers’ production was ready, but we wanted to start early,’

Despite the fact that their website was only opened two days ago, they had already received over ten orders. ‘Unless we start getting mass orders, there won’t be much profit. ‘ For now, we are more concerned with mango quality and client pleasure than with profit,’ Mr. Bhaskar said.
