Kisan Mahapanchayats and AIKS to amplify protest against Farm Laws

Kisan Mahapanchayats and AIKS to amplify protest against Farm Laws

After February 11, All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) will further amplify its protest against the New Farm Laws of the Center. As part of its strategy, the Farmers’ Kisan Mahapanchayats will also be held in Maharashtra, said AIKS President and CPI(M) Central Committee Member Ashok Dhawale.

In Maharashtra, the Kisan Mahapanchayats are to be held in Thane, Palghar, Nashik, Ahmednagar as well as other districts. Meetings would not be held simultaneously, but on different dates, on the basis of decisions taken by local farmer leaders.

Thousands of protesting farmers gathered earlier this Friday in the Shamli district of western Uttar Pradesh for the Kisan Mahapanchayat.

Dhawale said that they would pass a resolution rejecting the three anti-farmer laws of the Modi Government at the major meetings. They would seek a new law for the implementation of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for agricultural produces. There is also a plan to step up the boycott of Reliance Industries Ltd and Adani Group products and services.

AIKS President said that a meeting will be held in Thane and Palghar district on 11 February to further plan the Kisan Mahapanchayats campaign. Another such meeting will take place on 15 February in Nashik, in which all senior members of AIKS and leader representatives of other organizations are opposed to the law.

Kisan Mahapanchayats would not be the exclusive area of AIKS, but it would be a meeting and discussion platform for the different sections of society that oppose the laws of agriculture. These meetings would be similar to the farmers’ agitation meeting held at Azad Maidan in Mumbai on 25 January.

A resolution calling for the release of 112 farmers in various jails for protesting against farm law would also be put and passed in the Kisan Mahapanchayats. Local issues for farmers would also be addressed at such meetings, he stated.

A new law on the remunerative procurement of agricultural products is crucial for a state such as Maharashtra. Today, MSP-based procurement has no meaning in Maharashtra since the products are not purchased on the basis of the MSP formula, Dhawale claimed.
