Kerala Agri University emphasis for safe-to-eat vegetable production.

A webinar organised by Kerala Agricultural University in association with Indian Society of Vegetable Science (ISVS) have emphasised and called for the need to focus on Subhiksha Keralam Mission and the production of safe-to-eat vegetables.

The three-day webinar was attended by about 600 participants and got edified from the topic on ‘Challenges and Opportunities of vegetable production in warm humid tropics’. The main focus and highlight was on the importance of vegetable cultivation in humid tropics area.

The Deputy Director General (Horticulture), ICAR,  Mr.  Anand Kumar Singh, who was the chief guest of the program, has stressed upon the need to focus on the cultivation,  production and procurement of native vegetables and called for the implementation of  crop improvement programmes for farmers with an objective to increase the nutritional value and security.

Mr. KV Peter, the President of Indian Society of Vegetable Science (ISVS), has outlined the importance of vegetable therapy and the cultivation of vegetables in the farmhouses. He also pointed out that more emphasis should be on developing farming techniques such as micro-green cultivation along with other specialised systems of vegetable cultivation.

The Webinar program headlined with five technical sessions on the below  topics ―
  1. Challenges and opportunities of protected cultivation in humid tropics
  2. Breeding of cucurbits for humid tropics
  3. Vegetables as protective food
  4. Breeding for biotic stress resistance of solanaceous vegetables in humid tropics
  5. Crop improvement in okra and tuber crops
Outcome of the Program

The 3 days webinar program would help prepare a roadmap to implement and  achieve self-sufficiency of cultivation of safe-to-eat vegetables in warm humid tropical area, said the program organising secretary, Mr. T Pradeepkumar,
