Jan 31, 2022, ‘A Day of Betrayal’ – Trade Unions, Sectoral Associations supports SKM

The Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions and Independent Sectoral Federations/Associations supports Samyukta Kisan Morcha’s (SKM) initiative to declare January 31, 2022, as ‘A Day of Betrayal.’

In a statement issued on Monday, the Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions and Independent Sectoral Federations/Associations supported Samyukta Kisan Morcha’s proposal to declare January 31, 2022, as ‘A Day of Betrayal.’

‘We have been eagerly monitoring developments since the Prime Minister’s announcement of the abolition of farm laws on November 19, 2021,’ the statement continues.

While the general reaction was one of joy at the announcement, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) had taken a cautious stance, stating that while the dharna at Delhi’s borders had been lifted, many more, equally important demands remained unfulfilled, and the future course of action would be determined by the government’s actions in the matter.

Dragging the promises

Unfortunately, the government appears to be dragging its feet on promises made in writing to the SKM, such as the formation of a committee to investigate the issue of legal guarantee for MSP for agricultural produce, the withdrawal of the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2021, the dismissal of Ajay Mishra Teni, the alleged perpetrator of the Lakhimpur Kheri atrocity, and so on.

The Agricultural Minister, Narendra Tomar, cynically stated, ‘we can always enact the legislation again,’ in an attempt to rescue the image of the Prime Minister as having buckled in the face of the Farmers’ rock-like tenacity.

As a result, the choice to mark January 31st as ‘A Day of Betrayal’ is correct, and this government must be warned that their act of betrayal will not go ignored.

‘We also appreciate the SKM for their decision to support our nationwide strike call for February 23-24, 2022, against anti-labor, anti-people, and anti-national policies that include sweeping privatization of national assets and pushing labour regulations.’

‘We call on our unions across India to show their solidarity and support in whatever way they can for declaring January 31st as a black day’ the statement continued.
