IMD helped 43 million farmers

The weather forecasting services of the Meteorological department helped almost 43 million farmers to take smart decisions on their crops every day, Earth Science Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan has said it on Friday.

He added that the government aims to expand the reach to 70 million by 2022, and 100 million by 2025.

Presently, 43 million farmers are receiving text messages containing weather predictions and guidance on crop sowing, harvesting and storage, Vardhan said at the India Meteorological Department‘s 146th foundation day.

The minister claimed  that the India’s weather bureau is regarded the world’s fourth-best, next to the US, England and Japan forecasting better.

Dr. Vardhan further added that India in terms of monitoring and prediction the cyclones, tsunamis and other natural disasters, such as lightning, thunderstorms and heat waves, also has one of the world’s greatest systems.

At Kufri in Himachal Pradesh and Mukteshwar in Uttarakhand, two doppler weather radars were officially launched by Dr. Vardhan. This takes the country’s general radar count to 29. Another two are being built, with one in Jammu likely to be operational by the end of the year, officials said.
