Exports of 37 major Agri-processed foods topped $10 billion in current fiscal

Exports of 37 major agricultural commodities and processed foods ranked topped at $10 billion in the first half of the current fiscal year with the present shipments raisning by 17.6% to $1.007 billion.

The exports, encouragded and guided by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), were $8.51 billion during the same period a year ago.

‘Exports increased despite challenges to the global supply chain posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the figures were based on quick estimates released by the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S), Kolkata, an APEDA statement said.

In cereals category exports of Rice, which have been doing well since the last fiscal, raised by 12.3 % in the first half to $4.5 billion from $4.08 billion.

Other cereals are gaining ground

Shipments of other cereals, primarily maize, increased by 110 %, while exports of meat, dairy, and poultry products increased by 20.7%.

Other cereals exports surged to $448 million in April–September this 2021, up from $213 million the last year. Meat, dairy, and poultry product shipments increased to $1.9 billion from $1.57 billion the previous year.

Fresh fruit and vegetable exports increased by 8.5% to $1.3 billion from $1.2 billion, while shipment of processed food products such as cereals, prepared foods, and miscellaneous processed items increased by 34.2%.

among dry fruits commodities category Cashew exports increased by 31.6 % to $222 million from $169 million, while oilmeal shipments surged by only 1.2 %. Exports of oilmeals surged to $467.3 million from $461.65 million.

‘The significant increase in agri-exports is seen as a testimony of the government’s commitment to increasing farmers’ income by focusing on boosting exports of agricultural and processed food products from the country,’ the statement said, adding that the export performance was a continuation of the growth seen last fiscal year.
