Doubling farmers’ income is govt’s top priority, keeping promise by FY23: Goyal.

On Friday, Union Minister Piyush Goyal said that doubling farmers’ income is a ‘top priority’ for the government, which is also working on other ways to help farmers.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said at an event of Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), ‘Doubling farmers’ incomes has been a top priority for this government.’

In 2017, the government said that it wanted to help farmers’ incomes double by 2022 when the country will have been independent for 75 years. This goal will be reached through a number of policy changes.

The government’s think tank, NITI Aayog, had put together a report on the subject that included a plan for keeping the promise by the end of FY23. Experts say that farmers’ incomes would have had to go up by 10.41% every year for this to happen.

Goyal also criticized big tech companies for using complicated algorithms to make sure that people who buy things on e-commerce sites or other online platforms go to certain suppliers. These suppliers are preferred by the platforms because they make more money.

He said that the ONDC project, which is being run by the government with help from the private sector, will help small stores like Kiranas that feel threatened by big tech companies like Amazon.

‘Neighborhood Kirana shops will be able to compete with modern, high-profile shops, and they will not only be able to stay in business but also make more money in the future,’ said the minister.

He said that a beta version of ONDC was released at a ceremony in Coimbatore, where some people in the open-platform ecosystem started to see what the idea could do.

Goyal said that once ONDC makes it possible for platforms to work together and gives consumers a choice, we will all be able to see how the new platforms help everyone.

The minister also told the ONDC team that the platform should be made available in regional languages so that more people can use it.
