Cyclone Mandous last bit makes low-pressure off the coasts of Kerala & Karnataka

As predicted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a part of the old cyclone Mandous that moved out of Kerala set up a low-pressure area over the South-East and East-Central Arabian Sea off the North Kerala and Karnataka coasts on Tuesday. Over the next two or three days, it will slowly move away from the West Coast and get weaker.

Tuesday morning’s satellite rain map shows that the low-pressure area created by former cyclone ‘Mandous’ is causing rain from the South Peninsula to the North and even parts of West-Central India.

Over the South Andaman Sea, the Strait of Malacca, and Sumatra, which are on the other side of Peninsular India, a new cyclonic circulation has formed. It will push easterly to south-easterly winds toward the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which will cause fairly widespread rain and a few places with heavy rain on Thursday.

Fresh rain bands were seen

From this weekend on, the next wave of organised rain for Tamil Nadu and the nearby South Coast of Andhra Pradesh will depend on where it goes and how strong it is. The IMD’s numerical model says that the circulation and the bands of easterly winds that go with it will move toward Sri Lanka. Rain bands could hit the coasts of South and North Tamil Nadu on Monday.

The IMD’s numerical model says that some of them will spread to the south coast of Andhra Pradesh and even to parts of the state’s north. The US National Centers for Environmental Prediction agrees and says that scattered light showers are likely in the interiors of Tamil Nadu and South Interior Karnataka, with a bit more rain along the coast of Kerala.

Fishermen to stay away

The IMD says that the ‘low’ that is currently off the coasts of North Kerala and Karnataka will bring light to moderate rain to parts of Tamil Nadu, South Interior Karnataka, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema over the next two days. Over Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep, it will be mostly light to moderate, with a few spots of heavy rain until Wednesday.

On Tuesday, fishermen may want to stay away from the South-East and East-Central parts of the Arabian Sea, as well as the coasts of Kerala and Karnataka and the Lakshadweep area.

On Wednesday, winds of 35–45 km/h with gusts up to 55 km/h may blow over these sea areas. On Thursday and Friday, winds of 35–45 km/h with gusts up to 55 km/h may blow over the East-Central and adjoining South-East Arabian Sea and the Central and adjoining South Arabian Sea.
