In his customary address to Parliament on the occasion of budget 2022, today, President Ram Nath Kovind emphasized the Narendra Modi government’s initiatives for the poor, women, and farmers – issues on which the Opposition has targeted the ruling BJP – as he asserted that India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing economies, with global investors having to put in $48 billion in the first seven months of this financial years.

At the same time, Kovind mentioned the government ‘beginning to liberate society from the manifestly arbitrary practice of Triple Talaq by making it a criminal offense,’ as well as the removal of restrictions on women performing Haj and the provision of scholarships to minority students, which resulted in a ‘significant reduction in the school dropout rate of Muslim girls and an increase in their enrolment.’

Farmers empowerment

On the subject of farmers, he stated that the government is constantly working to empower them and the rural economy. Despite the pandemic, farmers produced over 30 crore tonnes of food grains and 33 crore tonnes of horticulture produce in 2020-21, he said, adding that the government ‘made record procurement to match the record production.’

Though the repeal of the highly controversial farm laws was not mentioned, he stated that agriculture exports had reached a new high, increasing by 25% and totaling around ₹ 3 lakh crore.

He also stated that the government gives maximum credit to small farmers and that over ₹ 1.80 lakh crore has been given to over 11 crore farmers, resulting in a ‘transformation.’ He also stated that the government is investing at an unprecedented level in developing infrastructure near farmlands.
