Amit Shah: NDDB, GCMMF can make India self-sufficient in dairy machinery

Amit Shah - NDDB, GCMMF can make India self-sufficient in dairy machinery manufacturing

Amit Shah: NDDB, GCMMF can make India self-sufficient in dairy machinery manufacturing.

Amit Shah, the Union Minister for Cooperation, told the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF) and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) on Monday that they need to make India self-sufficient in dairy machinery manufacturing. This is in addition to the task that Amul was given to provide a marketing platform for organic food products.

Shah asked the leaders of co-operative dairy farms at the International Dairy Federation’s (IDF) World Dairy Summit 2022 to think about manufacture their own machinery and equipment.

‘We now make enough milk to be self-sufficient. But we still need to import machinery for processing dairy products that add value. I have no doubt that NDDB and Amul can handle this together. The National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) has a lot of money, so money isn’t a problem. If we did this, we could make our own dairy machines and sell them on the world market,’ said Shah.

Alternative economic model

Shah also said at the IDF-WDS 2022 that the world could learn from India’s co-operative model and use it as an alternative economic model to reach goals of inclusion and broader welfare.

‘The history of co-ops in India goes back about 120 years. India has given the world a successful model that is different from the communist model (in which the government controls production) and the market model (which works on mass production by corporate).’

About 1.8 billion farmers live in India. They are spread out over 200,000 villages. Most of them are related to cooperative dairying through the operation flood model, which was put into place in the early 1970s.

India’s annual milk production grew at a slow rate of 1%, but this rate went up to 4.6% a decade after Operation Flood started, and then to 5% after that. At the moment, India’s milk production is about 210 million tonnes and growing by about 6% per year.

‘There are 2 million village milk societies in the world today. I promise that before the elections in 2024, we will add 2 lakh more dairies and increase the amount of milk made by 1.75 times. Shah said that Operation Flood has helped India’s dairy industry and milk production.’
